#1: Playtime on the Prairie

Do you have or know a young child who needs to get out this summer? Head to Conner Prairie! It’s an outdoor museum and also Indiana’s first Smithsonian affiliate. As part of their spring and summer programming, they offer Playtime on the Prairie for visitors ages 0-5. The hour-long sessions are specially designed for each age range and take place around the beautiful historical and natural grounds of Conner Prairie. Classes take place from April through September but check the age range you need for specific dates. It’s just $12 per child, but the accompanying adult is free!

#2: The Indianapolis 500

The Indianapolis 500 is an iconic race that takes over the city each year. There is a unique energy at the racetrack, and fans flock to the area in the days and weeks leading up to the big day. This year’s race takes place on May 26th, but you can enjoy more race time fun with other events leading up to race day. There’s the PPG Armed Forces Qualifying where you can watch the Indy 500 cars zoom around the track to qualify for their spots. Miller Lite Carb Day is one giant party, complete with some practice racing and a concert, to help you get pumped up for what’s to come.

#3: Throwback Camp

If you read the first event and thought, “I miss the days of summer camp,” then this is designed especially for you! Throwback Camp also takes place at Conner Prairie on a few select dates this summer: June 15, June 29, and July 13. You do have to pay and register in advance, but it’s jam-packed with all your favorite camp activities for adults only. You’ll enjoy canoeing, archery, field games, ziplining, crafts, and more. Unleash your inner child and have some old-school fun!

#4: 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Swimming

Every four years, the world is abuzz about the Summer Olympics. This year, you can be part of it by watching the qualifying events for the U.S. swim team hopefuls! The trials are taking place in a unique location, too. Lucas Oil Stadium is hosting, and it will be the first time this event is taking place on a football field. It’s been 100 years since Indianapolis hosted this prestigious event, so you won’t want to miss it!

#5: Juneteenth Foodways Festival

Visit a unique Indianapolis landmark and enjoy tasty food all at the same time at the Juneteenth Foodways Festival. This event takes place on June 19th (Juneteenth), a federal holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S., and it’s hosted at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. It focuses on Dolly Johnson, “a renowned Black caterer and chef from Lexington, Kentucky, hired by President Benjamin Harrison in 1889,” and celebrates her legacy and the legacy of Black culture and food in America. You’ll enjoy food, retailers, and opportunities to learn more about Dolly Johnson.

#6: Indianapolis 5K & Monumental Mile

Looking for something more active for your summer plans or want something to motivate you to get up and get moving? Time to dust off your sneakers and train for the Indianapolis 5K & Monumental Mile. It takes place on Saturday, June 22nd, and there is a race event suitable for active individuals of any age. There’s even a non-competitive race that welcomes strollers, baby joggers, and wagons. It’s a great way to get outside and get going in the heart of downtown Indianapolis.

#7: Water Lantern Festival

Relax and enjoy some beauty at the Water Lantern Festival. This special evening event takes place July 13th at Military Park. It’s a family-friendly event, all ages are welcome. Light a lantern and watch it glow on the water. Concerned about the environmental impact? This event is sustainable; all lanterns and trash will be retrieved by volunteers to ensure no litter is left behind. It’s the perfect place to make a special memory.
