Alternatives to the Big Family Meal

Williamsburg North’s spacious floor plans give you plenty of room for hosting a Thanksgiving get-together, but in 2020, this holiday may look a bit different than it normally does. With people across the country choosing to limit travel this holiday season, the annual Thanksgiving feast might be replaced by a small meal enjoyed with just a few people. That doesn’t mean it can’t be special, though!

If you’re staying in Indy for Thanksgiving, we’ve got some tips on how to make a small meal and support local businesses.

Serve Seafood
Shrimp cocktail, fresh crab cakes, or calamari can up the fanciness of any meal, and you can generally find those items (subject to availability) at Caplinger’s Fresh Catch, about 3 miles northeast of Williamsburg North. This family-run restaurant is known for being one of the best places in Indianapolis to get fresh seafood, and they also sell their housemade cocktail sauce and tartar sauce by the jar.

Uncork the Wine
Looking for a nice bottle of wine for your scaled-down holiday meal? Head over to the locally owned Kahn’s Fine Wines & Spirits, about 3 miles southeast of Williamsburg North. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, so if you don’t know what wine pairs with the food you’ll be serving, just ask for a recommendation.

Pick Up Some Cheese
Not in the mood to cook appetizers? Serve some artisanal cheese and crackers instead. Broad Ripple’s Cork+Cracker (about 2 miles west of Williamsburg North) carries fine cheeses from local creameries and area farms.

Don’t Forget Dessert
Founded in 1913, Taylor’s Bakery operated out of several locations before moving to 62nd and Allisonville Road. This bakery is still run by the Taylor family, and over the years, they’ve earned a reputation for producing outstanding donuts, pastries, and cakes. If you’re going to the bakery to pick up dessert, grab some fresh dinner rolls while you’re there!
